A Norwegian black metal mafia. Did ever such a thing exist? Let's find out.[1] Back in 1992, when Euronymous quested to ensure that as few bands started to play black metal as possible. Because, you know, he wanted Mayhem to be the special band. I've explained his feelings in this context before, but I can briefly sum it up. He didn't want others to play black metal, not because they weren't "true", but because he didn't want any competition for Mayhem.[2] For some weird reason, he saw other bands as competitors instead of fellow artists. And we, the others were sort of caught up in this web. And when he started to pretend there was some sort of black metal mafia, we played along for some time. I say for some time because only for a very short time. He pretended that there was some inner circle of true cult bands of, you know, these evil satanic black metal guys who are really tough. And he used[3] this to pressure other bands to or to make other bands fair him and sort of like kneel to him and suck up to him in order to be accepted as a true band.[4][5] There was no black metal mafia. There was no inner circles. This was just one guy who had a big mouth and some others who played along for the fun of it until they realized that he was full of crap.[6] And he was rather frustrated in the end because all the people who were in the "inner circle" had abandoned his "mafia". And we didn't play along anymore. We didn't think it was funny anymore. And those who believe there was a black metal mafia ever are those who didn't really have anything to do with the scene directly. Those are the guys who didn't really know him. It's just guys who, you know, ordered one or two albums from his shop and who of course in hindsight, talk about their best friend, Euronymous, and I knew him so well. Of course he can't object to that, can he? Because, you know, he's dead. Okay. That'll be it for today, guys. Bye-bye.
- About the Inner Circle (The Norwegian Black Metal Mafia)
- WTF is "true" anyhow? True idiot perhaps?
- You would not believe the rumours he created and spread about ME, in this context
- Then he went to the media in January 1993, because his parents told him to, and apologised to all of Norway on behalf of the Norwegian BM scene, for all the discomfort "we" had caused.
- And people wonder why everybody lost respect for him, and why he was seen as a clown thereafter. He blamed me though. "Damn Varg".
