This car doesn't have a dashboard, so I have to hold the camera in my hand. And what am I going to talk about today? Let's find out!

I want to talk about role-playing games, and one of the things that I don't like about a certain style of role-playing. For example, my character is a professional at something. And then the character is performing a task that he knows very well. And then the game master asks me to describe what my character is doing. Well, my character is a professional in that skill, in that task. I am not.

So, for example, my character is a surgeon, performing surgery on a patient. Then my character would know what to do, but I have no idea how to perform surgery.[1]So why would the game master expect me to describe what my character is doing? I don't like it. My character has a skill, and if he is very skilled at something, then my character is very skilled at something. I am not. So, instead of having me describe what the character is doing in order to decide whether or not it's a success, I would like the dice to decide. Because that's what dice are for. They are there to decide if the task was really that difficult, and if my character was skillful enough to perform the task. I am not a surgeon. My character is. Let's see if he managed to do it. Let the dice decide. Not my role-playing.

The whole point with role-playing games is that you play the role of another, and the skills of that character is what matters. That character is not you. What you know, your skills, your knowledge, is irrelevant. The point is the skills, the abilities, the experience of the character you are playing. Of course, this is just a matter of taste, and some like that type of playing, and I don't.

What do you like? What do you think? Am I wrong? Are the others wrong? Or is it, like I said, just a matter of taste? Let me know in the comment field below.
