The Treason of Saruman

Saruman was one of the Istari, sent to Middle-earth to challenge Sauron. But Saruman saw what power Sauron had, and wanted it for himself. Saruman became like Sauron. He adopted his hatred for all that grows, lives and is free. He began to cut down the trees and burn them to fuel his industry. He had no respect for anything. He mixed orcs and goblins with cruel men, to produce an army of half-orcs, goblinmen and men willing to lay waste to the free world. Saruman was the White Wizard, the leader of our order, but in his folly he fell and became "Saruman of Many Colours" Saruman sent out half-orc spies to corrupt the peoples of Middle-earth; to Rohan, to Dunland, to Breeland and to Hobbiton as well. He spread the Sauronic hatred, thinking he would become more powerful if he did so. But Sauron does not share power. He wants it all for himself, in his dark fortress in the desert of Mordor. Not knowing it himself, Saruman was but a puppet of Sauron. An instrument of war. A tool. Cannon fodder for the dark lord. He betrayed the free peoples of Middle-earth, for power. He betrayed our Order, by becoming just like the enemy he was sent to defeat.

Lessons for today:
  • Sauron does not share power. If you work for him, you are to him nothing but a disposable tool. "Many love treason, but nobody loves the traitor."
  • Abandoning your own traditions and adopting Sauronic hatred, like Saruman did, is plain folly. Treasure what is your own, your roots, your heritage, your kin and traditions. Anything that comes from the desert of Mordor turns your own land into a desert.
