Interview with my Gen A daughter, Part I
Today I'm going to interview my daughter (14). And does she have anything sensible to say at all? Let's find out.

Okay. Today I'm going to interview my daughter.
- What's your name?
- Sówili.(?)
- Let's start with the most important question. What's your favourite car?
- My favourite car? Of the ones we have?
- No
- No? Ferrari.
- Ferrari.
- I don't know which one, but I like them, they are pretty.
- Okay. And your favorite car that we own?
- I would say this one, the Lada [pronounces as "layda"] because it's...
- The what?
- This one, the Lada [pronounces as "lahda"].
- Lada, okay.
- Layda or Lahda...
- And why do you prefer this one?
- Because it's pretty... it is.
- And... How do you rank them all? The UAZ [first], the Volkswagen [second], And this one [third]?
- I'd say this one is the best one, then... I mean the thing is that I don't think the Volkswagen is pretty.
- Looks like a bread.
- What?
- Looks like a loaf...
- Yes. No, it's not very pretty, but it is very useful and practical. So I would say the Lada, then the UAZ, then the Volkswagen... The UAZ is pretty too.
- It is. Okay, and what's your favourite movie?
- My favourite movie?
- Yeah
- Gladiator
- Gladiator?
- Yes
- Ah, with... who's that... Russell Crowe, is it?
- Russell Crowe?
- I don't know
- I have no idea of the names
- Okay
- What do you like about it?
- I really like movies with Romans...
- Oh, yeah
- I think those are kind of cool.
- And you're learning Italian, too?
- Yes, I am, but that has nothing to do with that...[1]
- Like the Roman...
- Roman... yes, ...
- Sounds really pro Roman, doesn't she?
- No, I'm not. I just... I don't know
- Do you like it? The era?
- Yeah, I do like the era.
- Classical antiquity.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- And life was simple then. If you didn't like somebody, you could just kill them.
- Ah, you like that?
- No, I'm just kidding. It's just that...
- She's not kidding.
- I am.
- Okay, who do you prefer? Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?
- Harry Potter, 100% sure
- That's the wrong answer.
- No, it's not.
- Okay, why do you prefer Harry Potter? I mean, to me, Harry Potter is like this entitled brat who just has everything handed to him, and then he doesn't really do anything with it. At least from the movies I've seen.
- He keeps saving the world.
- Isn't basically the other ones doing that, and he's just there?
- I mean, it is kind of true because he is like... He is a person which has been mistreated and abused in his entire childhood by his family. So I don't think it's not deserved that he has powers because he's a nice person.
- You're talking about the books, right?
- No, I've only read the first one and the part of the second one, because it's so boring.
- It's so boring?
- Yeah. I don't really like the books. Especially that since I watched the movies before, I already know everything which is going to happen. So it's just boring to read the books.
- So Èloi is the one who reads the books all the time.[2]
- Yes. He's the one who kept reading them again and again.
- Well, but you like the Lord of the rings too, right?
- I think it's okay. It's not really my kind of movie.
- Again, wrong answer.
- But what's true is that I've watched them billions of times, so...
- That's true.
- So it's normal for me that they're more boring today. I also watch Harry Potter sometimes.
- But he's not an entitled brat like Harry Potter.
- No. He's... what?
- Like Frodo
- Frodo...
- Instead, he is given a burden...
- Yes, that's true...
- ... not some gift...
- ... and he overcomes it.
- ...but he's so, like, arrogant and just...
- Frodo is arrogant?
- Yes. I don't like him at all.
- You talk about the film, right?
- Yes, of course. Because I haven't read the books.
- She hasn't read the books...
- I just mean in the movie...
- Why haven't you read the books?
- Because I just don't like it. I like books which are scary.
- Oh, yes.
- So you read books, but not these books?
- Yes, I read a lot of thrillers.
- Okay. Let's find another question. What music do you like?
- You're not gonna like that answer, but I love Taylor Swift, pop music...
- Yeah, well, I don't care there's nothing wrong with that, per say, but.
- Yes, I kind of listen to every single female artist,
- And I think some of the tracks by Taylor Swift are nice. I know a few of them, the old ones. I don't like the new stuff that you try to push on me.
- Old... They're not that old. "Wildest Dreams" is from her album 1989, and that one is...
- 1989?
- Yes, because...
- "It's not that old". It's older than you.
- No, no, it wasn't made in 1989. She's born in 1989.
- Oh, she's born in 1989.
- Yes, the album is called 1989
- But it's, yes it is quite old. I think it's from somewhere like 2014 something. So it's. Yes, it is quite old. That's true.
- Fairly old.
- Yes, it is.
- And what's your hobbies?
- My hobbies? Reading and playing chess, mainly. Almost only playing chess.
- What about... you used to knit.
- Yes, I still do that, but that's more like at some point of the year, I'm gonna love to knit and to crochet or to sew. It depends. Just on the moments.
- And you're repairing clothes or making clothes?
- I make and repair. Depends, but usually what I make...
- Didn't you repair something that I had...
- Yes. Your pants.
- My pants. Where did I have a hole?
- I have no idea. I can't remember
- 👆🏻. Okay and you are homeschooled, right?
- Yes, you know that.
- Yes, I know that, but they don't. So I'm asking you the question, it's a rhetorical question. Have you had exams or anything?
- Exams? Oh, examples?
- Exams. Exams. Like, did you...
- Oh, yes, I passed an exam which is called [speaking french] (?). It's a French exam. I don't think you pass that in other countries, but it's like a "National exam", I think it's called.
- Okay. And you passed?
- I passed it with a good grade.
- And at home, what are you studying? Languages, right?
- Yes, I love studying languages, but I study everything.
- Do you enjoy my World War 2 history rants at the dinner table?
- That's true, yeah. Yeah, quite interesting.
- I feel like I'm vaccinating her against the lies she's going to meet later on. So what languages do you study? You know, French, of course?
- I'm fluent in French, Norwegian, English.
- Can you prove that?
- How? Would you want me to talk in french?
- Yes.
- [fr. Okay. I can speak French.] (?)
- [fr. Ah... that's great]. (?)
- [fr. Yeah, even now, when I speak French, I feel like I speak it badly, and that I now have a strange accent because I speak English.] (?)
- [speaks french] (?). And you know English? Of course.
- Yes.
- And you know Norwegian?
- Yes.
- Can you prove it?
- [speaks Norwegian] (?)
- [answers in Norwegian] (?)
- [speaks in Norwegian] (?)
- Oh, it's okay, we believe her, don't we?
- I hope so.
- And you study... Last time I talked to you, you said you studied Italian, but do you know Italian or is it just some words...
- It's really, like, I want to learn a lot of languages, and I'm doing a little bit of it in Duolingo, but not much, because I mainly do Chinese.
- So Italian is the language that you know the least?
- Yes, the least. Which is kind of weird, because Chinese is more complicated. But I know way more words in Chinese than in Italian.
- Yeah, but you don't speak fluent Chinese?
- No, not at all.
- But you can speak a little bit of Chinese?
- Yeah, I can speak Chinese.
- Do we believe her? No!
- I can speak Chinese.
- Okay, let's hear it ha-ha.
- [speaks Chinese] (?). [speaks Chinese] (?) means "I don't like math"
- And I understood some of it. "Good day, My name is Sówili. I'm 14 years old. Something like that?
- Yes. But I think I said my name is Lily, actually.
- Yeah, but that's the short form of Sówili. But that's good, isn't it? You're 14, and you know French, English, Norwegian, and you're studying Italian and Chinese.
- Yes.
- And you can do that because you are...?
- Homeschooled.

  1. The first "Fabio" in a Ferrari that shows up, and she is all done for...
  2. Talking about her older brother.
